Against the defence 'individual brothers speculated': the dated expectations were published in the organisation's own books (1889, 1917, 1920, 1966), magazines (1922-24, 1968), a Kingdom Ministry insert (1974) and a magazine masthead (to 1995); the organisation itself admitted in 1980 that 'statements published' had implied probability. The Watchtower, “Choosing the Best Way of Life”

15 maart 1980 · pp.17-18 · par. 5 · Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society

“With the appearance of the book Life Everlasting—in Freedom of the Sons of God ... considerable expectation was aroused regarding the year 1975. ... there were other statements published that implied that such realization of hopes by that year was more of a probability than a mere possibility. It is to be regretted that these latter statements apparently overshadowed the cautionary ones”

“This later led to the idea—sometimes stated as a possibility, sometimes more firmly—that since the seventh millennium of human history would begin in 1975, events associated with the beginning of Christ's Millennial Reign might start to take place then. ... some of their time calculations and the expectations that they associated with these gave rise to serious disappointments. Following 1925, meeting attendance dropped dramatically in some congregations in France and Switzerland. Again, in 1975, there was disappointment”

15 augustus 1968 · pp.494-501 · pars. 29-30, 37 · Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society

“Are we to assume from this study that the battle of Armageddon will be all over by the autumn of 1975, and the long-looked-for thousand-year reign of Christ will begin by then? Possibly, but we wait to see how closely the seventh thousand-year period of man's existence coincides with the sabbathlike thousand-year reign of Christ.”

The same paragraph (30) continues: 'Our chronology, however, which is reasonably accurate (but admittedly not infallible), at the best only points to the autumn of 1975 as the end of 6,000 years of man's existence on earth. It does not necessarily mean that 1975 marks the end of the first 6,000 years of Jehovah's seventh creative "day." ... It may involve only a difference of weeks or months, not years.' Par. 29: 'in the fall of the year 1975 ... it will be 6,000 years since the creation of Adam'. Par. 37: 'They have not dedicated their lives to serve Jehovah only until 1975.'

In fairness. Cautionary statements were published alongside the dated expectations: ‘it would be presumptuous … to assume just what the Lord is going to do’ (1924); ‘No one can say with certainty’ and ‘reasonably accurate (but admittedly not infallible)’ (1968); ‘we are not saying … Time is short’ (1966). The organisation has also acknowledged error in its own words, quoted above. What the record shows is that the disclaimers accompanied, rather than prevented, the dated expectations.
