“Are we to assume from this study that the battle of Armageddon will be all over by the autumn of 1975, and the long-looked-for thousand-year reign of Christ will begin by then? Possibly, but we wait to see how closely the seventh thousand-year period of man's existence coincides with the sabbathlike thousand-year reign of Christ.”

Does this mean that the above evidence positively points to 1975 as the time for the complete end of this system of things? Since the Bible does not specifically state this, no man can say. However, of this we can be sure: The 1970's will certainly see the most critical times mankind has yet known.”

Against the defence 'the light gets brighter' (Proverbs 4:18): The Watchtower of 1 December 1981 acknowledged that explanations 'have shown adjustments, seemingly to previous points of view', insisted that 'this has not actually been the case', compared the process to 'tacking', and said it 'has often served as a test of loyalty'. A reversal that later reverses again (the generation: 1951/1984 lifetime view; 1995 wicked contemporaries; 2008 anointed; 2010 overlapping anointed) is not a straight path of increasing light. The Watchtower, “The Path of the Righteous Does Keep Getting Brighter”

1 декември 1981 · p.27 · par. 2 · Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society

“At times explanations given by Jehovah's visible organization have shown adjustments, seemingly to previous points of view. But this has not actually been the case. This might be compared to what is known in navigational circles as 'tacking.'”

Uses Proverbs 4:18 ('the path of the righteous ... getting lighter') to frame doctrinal reversals as progress.

The Watchtower, “Saved From a 'Wicked Generation' / A Time to Keep Awake”

1 ноември 1995 · pp.10-21 · second article, par. 6 · Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society

“Jehovah's people have at times speculated about the time when the 'great tribulation' would break out, even tying this to calculations of what is the lifetime of a generation since 1914. ... Rather than provide a rule for measuring time, the term 'generation' as used by Jesus refers principally to contemporary people of a certain historical period, with their identifying characteristics.”

Redefines 'this generation' as the wicked contemporaries of the last days; first article (doc 1995804) sets out the lexical argument.

1993 · pp.631-633 · Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York

“This later led to the idea—sometimes stated as a possibility, sometimes more firmly—that since the seventh millennium of human history would begin in 1975, events associated with the beginning of Christ's Millennial Reign might start to take place then. ... some of their time calculations and the expectations that they associated with these gave rise to serious disappointments. Following 1925, meeting attendance dropped dramatically in some congregations in France and Switzerland. Again, in 1975, there was disappointment”

Adds that after 1975 'some withdrew from the organization. Others ... were disfellowshipped', and that 'the number who defected was relatively small'.

The Watchtower, “Why Are You Looking Forward to 1975?”

15 август 1968 · pp.494-501 · pars. 29-30, 37 · Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society

The same paragraph (30) continues: 'Our chronology, however, which is reasonably accurate (but admittedly not infallible), at the best only points to the autumn of 1975 as the end of 6,000 years of man's existence on earth. It does not necessarily mean that 1975 marks the end of the first 6,000 years of Jehovah's seventh creative "day." ... It may involve only a difference of weeks or months, not years.' Par. 29: 'in the fall of the year 1975 ... it will be 6,000 years since the creation of Adam'. Par. 37: 'They have not dedicated their lives to serve Jehovah only until 1975.'

In fairness. Cautionary statements were published alongside the dated expectations: ‘it would be presumptuous … to assume just what the Lord is going to do’ (1924); ‘No one can say with certainty’ and ‘reasonably accurate (but admittedly not infallible)’ (1968); ‘we are not saying … Time is short’ (1966). The organisation has also acknowledged error in its own words, quoted above. What the record shows is that the disclaimers accompanied, rather than prevented, the dated expectations. 8 октомври 1968 · pp.13-15 · Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York

“That seven-year period will evidently finish in the autumn of the year 1975. Does this mean that the above evidence positively points to 1975 as the time for the complete end of this system of things? Since the Bible does not specifically state this, no man can say. However, of this we can be sure: The 1970's will certainly see the most critical times mankind has yet known.”
